Hello, friends! My name is Dan Nelson. I am a full-time artist who works in a wide range of styles and mediums. When I paint alone in my studio, my "Joy Meter" registers about 7.2 . . . But when I paint alone in my studio with a LIVE UA-cam AUDIENCE, it registers about a 9.99!!
WHY? Because i really like people! And I love teaching about art while I produce it.
I have uploaded over 1000 videos--- most of them in my "Daily Art Adventure" series.
I hope you will jump on board and join our friendly community, especially if you are an aspiring artist.
I look forward to having you SUBSCRIBE and hit the BELL BUTTON so that you catch every one of my (nearly!) daily episodes.

18 Headless Flute
Another inept cameraman. But it's the only flute track I have at the moment.

There's a bit in the middle here where I am playing the flugelhorn through an octave-lower processor. A fun way to create a sonorous bass line.

Sorry I missed my head on this shot! I have since fired the cameraman. That's LIVE SHOWBIZ for ya! Still . . . I like the improv. Hope you do, too.

If that aint the funniest name for an instrument, I don't know what it. Uh, yeah . . . maybe the SACKBUT. (I'm liable to get dinged on UA-cam just for saying that word.)

I particularly enjoy getting sounds out of an instrument that people don't expect. Not too many whistles in your local garage band. But guess what? A quick internet search brings up about 8 times that the recorder/whistle was used (usually quite poorly, I'm sorry to say) by several classic rock groups. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix, to name just a few. Who knew!?

The harmonica is the most serendipitous musical instrument ever created. It was invented in Germany in the early 19th century, essentially for playing polkas. Then it went across the ocean, and I imagine some slave down in Louisiana got ahold of one and started playing it "backwards", ie: sucking air IN more than blowing air OUT. And voi la! The Blues were invented. This may not be EXACTLY how ...

Put on your asbestos suit. I'm going to be a musical snob for a moment. PLEASE don't tell me, "Hey! I played one of those in 5th grade." Um . . . No, you did not. Most of you received a musical immunization in 5th grade. Those of you for whom the Musical De-sensitization Sessions did not work (ie: you turned out musicians anyway) know exactly what I'm talking about. Okay, I promise to be good a...

My wife wants to know why I'm walking around like that. That's called STREET PERFORMING! I don't know . . . It just seemed like the thing to do. Plus it gave me a minute to warm up.
9 Classical Jammin' over Jesu Groove
Переглядів 682 місяці тому
People often ask me of the dozen or so that I play "What is your favorite instrument?" That's impossible to answer. A good smart-aleck answer is "The RIGHT one!." Different ones are favorites for different reasons. I suppose for just pure JAMMIN' Improv, the classical or nylon-string guitar would have to be near the top. Oh, wait . . . unless it's the blues harp . . . or the whistle . . . or th...

One thing I try really hard to avoid is wall-to-wall "Spa Music" you know, that schmoozy, put-everybody-to-sleep stuff. I like SOME of that . . . But then there's a time to wake up. I try to cover a wide range of styles on the street. That's one of the keys I've discovered for NOT having people complain about you.

Wow. I have patience, but unfortunately, not to this degree.
how can one person be so talented. He never ceases to amaze me. thanks for sharing Dan
FINALLY a video explaining exactly what I’ve been searching for constantly. This ole gem finally hit my algorithm upon searching for the billionth time. THANK YOU 🙏🏼 I freehand my sketches 95% because I dont always have stuff for transferring my sketches but I don’t paint on canvas or acrylic often. I’m mostly watercolor but love all mediums. I wasn’t familiar with how to go about sketching on canvas with charcoal and painting over
Beautiful Dan, how are you doing
"a control freak's paradise" this really clarified things for me. I was a bit mystified by the horse demo, much as I enoyed it. This is great! I was a rapidograph freak, a number of decades ago, and would often work on eggs. But this --- oh boy. I have to try it at least once. You have turned me on to it. thanks

I've been following your channel for years Dan and I was just watching your first video you posted 13 years ago... there is magic in that style of painting... no pencils, no glazes...just straight up plein air... really great stuff ua-cam.com/video/9tiFgCh5J34/v-deo.html

Clever bunny😊 sending happy Easter/holiday wishes to you and all.
As someone who has not yet seen the ocean, this feels coastal to me :)
Beautiful Dan😊 Lovely to see you, sending best wishes from Australia 🦘
Thanks, old friend! So nice to hear from you.
🎶Nice, Dan!🎶
Watch this video to go to sleep sometimes.
Dan, have you taken apart the 0.13 teal rapidograph nib? Because I have and the wire is so thin and fragile, that it is impossible to get back into the point. Also, ink flow in them is very sporadic. Do you have any advice for me? I have a new nib for it and am not planning on pulling out the wire ever again. I have one that is apart and am waiting until I feel steady before attempting to put it back.
I agree. I finally gave up on those super-fine models altogether. It just wasn't worth the wrestling match.
I am a tight painter, I don’t stick out my tongue though. Lol I could never ever do this technique much to my dismay. Your painting is beautiful, I will try to imitate as much as possible for a painting I am working on right now. Thank you for all the tips and hints. You are an excellent painter and great instructor.
Thank you! Don't worry about it too much. Just be YOU!
I guess seeing an expert do something is worth more than doing it yourself sometimes! 🤔
To me, the proportion of the width to height of his head looks wrong. The ghost image is making it harder to see
You might be right, but very often the camera angle messes with us. I wrestled with this one until I got it right.
What size are you working on? Guessing 24x36? 18x24?
I ride here
wow..
Amazing ❤
Give pyrrols red a trial. Excelent pigment
I love the title haha
Hello, I can’t seem to find part 2
Me either!! Maybe I never did it. So sorry! I'd still like to get back to this series.
I’m confused. You’ve stated removing and oil paint from canvas, but then it turned into removing acrylic paint. Which is it?
Bla-Bla, Bla-Bla, vor laufender Kamera!
Ha! my country of birth...wat ya doing there Dan ???
its great to see you posting again , wish you all the best
Bros music taste goes hard whats the song name
Thank you for the insight on fuzzie edges... I guess that is what is called lost edges.... it really helped out my paintings Dan! I'm going back and fixing each one that didn't yet sell.
Personally I think adding white to some of building edges and adding the pink of the sunset to some off the trees would have made it pop. The lower half just pure shadow you can’t get around that. Also those right hand buildings need some small amount of green in the deep shadows. Otherwise it’s like two paintings cut in half. Just my acumen as a painter not that I could ever produce something as aesthetic as you. Or some of that golden yellow really needs to find it’s way to some of the light sources in the lower half of the painting one or both. Perhaps on the asphalt or the tops of trees.
Just a thought on your dominant hand thesis, the more you use your other hand the more control your brain kicks in. I am ambidextrous after years of training (not inherent) so when I apply paint it feels the same with both hands. Funnily enough, I have noticed if I use just the one-handed approach to, say, a landscape, there is a visible perpendicular tilt to the composition only discernible when I step back from a painting. To correct this I use the scumble technique using my other hand. Do you experience any of this, Dan?

Just wanted to say thank you 🙏
Merry Christmas!!

Hi Dan😊 sorry I missed your live (broadcasting very early in morning here in Australia) just wanted to say hello and thankyou for all the videos you have shared over the years , your generosity in sharing your knowledge and skills has opened up a new world for me. With abstract lines. Spell check is a pain in butt sometimes.
